Synthetic vs Conventional Oil

Guide to oil changes ebook

If you think about oil the way you think about blood in the human body, you’ll understand the importance. Oil is the fluid that gets pumped through a vehicle’s engine, ensuring that all the moving parts are well lubricated and performing at optimal levels. As you drive through the Avon, Indianapolis, and Plainfield areas, your oil will surely become well used.

As oil becomes well used and begins to age, however, small metallic particles start to shave off into the oil. As the oil is then pushed back through the engine, these particles can cause damage to the engine. When oil ages, it can also become thicker, making it more difficult for the oil to adequately be pushed through. However, this can easily be avoided with regular oil changes.

At Andy Mohr Volkswagen, we’re happy to help you keep your oil and engine in excellent condition!

Different Types of Oil

Synthetic oil has humble beginnings as conventional oil, but that’s where the similarities end. Synthetic oil is then put through an intricate process that works to make it better at lubricating your engine. This process modifies the oil to ensure that it works better, consequently increasing your car’s engine function over the long term. Plus, it can even make older cars with higher mileage work a bit better!

Synthetic oil offers several upgrades to conventional oil, as the refinement process makes it work a little better for your vehicle. These upgrades include:

  • Lower emissions
  • Better fuel economy
  • Better oil life
  • Less sludge
  • Better for all weather conditions
  • Helps clean the engine
  • Reduced breakdowns
  • Cost effective

How Often Should I Change My Oil?  synthetic oil change

With a vehicle that is still using conventional oil, it’s recommended that you see your service technician every 3,000 miles for an oil change. This is a fairly stringent recommendation, considering conventional oil breaks down much faster than synthetic oil. If left to go longer than this recommended timeframe, the oil can become less efficient at protecting your engine.

Synthetic oil, however, offers you up to 7,500 miles before you have to head into the service center for an oil change. Some newer engines offer even more time between oil changes, sometimes up to 10,000 miles or once a year. Check your vehicle’s manual to get the recommended mileage for oil changes.
