Do I Need a 2- or 4-Wheel Alignment?

Tire Alignment When you go in to have your wheels aligned, you’re likely going to encounter the question of if you need a 2- or 4-wheel alignment. It really depends on the type of car that you have and how its suspension system is set up.

If you’re driving a car with a simple front-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive driveline, you’ll only need two wheels to be aligned as only two wheels are steering. If you’re using an all-wheel-drive vehicle with an independent suspension system, you’ll want a 4-wheel alignment.

What Happens During a Wheel Alignment?

There’s a lot of detailed calculations that go into realigning the tires as your service technician has to find the ideal angle for your car’s wheels based on its suspension system. Your mechanic will gauge the four alignment angles, toe, thrust, camber, and caster to determine how the tires should be aligned for proper handling.

How Misaligned Tires Affect Driving

Worn Tires Driving with misaligned tires can affect the overall safety of your vehicle if left uncared for. A common sign of misaligned tires is your car pulling to one side as you drive. This reduction in stable handling can lead to you putting more effort in keeping your car straight.

In addition to making it harder for your car to handle effectively, misaligned tires can often lead to uneven tire wear. If your tires wear out prematurely, you may have less traction on the road and even experience longer stopping distances while braking.
