What Is a Tire Rotation?

Cars demand a lot from tires. Over the course of their lifespan, certain tires will wear down more quickly than others. Typically, front tires experience more wear due to bearing the weight of the engine and transmission.

Tire Rotation PatternsTo help your tires wear evenly, you’ll want to schedule a tire rotation. This maintenance exchanges your vehicle’s front wheels with the ones in the rear to equalize their wear.

Tire Rotation Patterns

When performing a tire rotation, there are a few patterns that can help your tires wear properly. Each pattern involves tires moving between the front and rear but also switching between the left and right sides of the car. Determining which pattern your car requires is largely determined by your vehicle’s driveline.

For rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive cars, you’ll want to use the Rearward Cross Pattern. This pattern moves your rear wheels forward while flipping the side of the front wheels before moving them to the rear.

In a front-wheel drive car, you’ll want to use a Forward Cross. This pattern moves the front wheels back while flipping the rear wheels before moving them to the front.

A third option called an X-Pattern can work for all drivelines. As the name suggests, the tires on both ends are flipped before switching the front and rear tires in an “X” pattern.

When to Rotate Your Tires

Tire Rotation PatternsGenerally, drivers are advised to have their tires rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. This interval usually coincides with your oil change schedule, so both services can be performed during a single appointment.

Another easy way to maintain a regular tire rotation schedule is to follow the seasons. If you use winter and summer tires, this method will ensure that your tires get rotated periodically while providing much better situational handling.
