2021 VW Atlas vs Toyota Highlander
The Volkswagen Atlas and the Toyota Highlander have a lot in common. They’re both safe and stylish SUVs that give you and your family lots of room to relax. So, which SUV is right for you? The team at Andy Mohr Volkswagen put together this 2021 VW Atlas vs. Toyota Highlander comparison to help drivers in Avon, Indianapolis, and Plainfield, IN, decide.
Interior Dimensions
The 2021 VW Atlas and the Toyota Highlander come with three rows of seats, so you can feel comfortable pulling into the carpool lane. When you’re not taking the team to practice or driving your extended family around for the holidays, you can use that space for running errands.
The Volkswagen has room for all your bags with a big trunk and folding second- and third-row seats that can make room for more. There’s so much space with the seats folded down that you’ll be able to pack boxes and furniture.
The Toyota Highlander also includes folding seats, but it doesn’t have nearly as much trunk space and has a lot less storage space with the seats folded down than in the VW Atlas.

Safety Features
To help give you peace of mind, the 2021 VW Atlas was built with a strong safety cage that features front and rear crumple zones. It’s designed to absorb energy during a collision. Plus, it includes both an Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and an Intelligent Crash Response System that will unlock the doors, disable the fuel pump, and activate the hazard lights.
On top of helping protect you, the VW Atlas also comes with technology that can help prevent accidents before they occur. It includes driver-assistance features that will give you more awareness while you drive, such as:
- Blind Spot Monitor
- Rear Traffic Alert
- Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking
- Rear View Camera System
The Toyota Camry also comes with a whole system of smart safety features, but unfortunately, it doesn’t include a standard Blind Spot Monitor. It also doesn’t feature any sort of post-collision safety system, either.
Infotainment Systems
You’ll also find technology at your fingertips in these SUVs. The VW Atlas and the Toyota Highlander feature sleek touchscreens on the dashboard, plus lots of helpful features. You’ll be able to stream music, stay connected, and see where you’re headed with the following features:
- Apple CarPlay®
- Android Auto™
- SiriusXM® Radio
- Voice Recognition
- Navigation System
The VW Atlas also offers a high-tech experience on the instrument cluster. The Volkswagen Digital Cockpit gives you a fully customizable 10-inch screen that includes different display modes, including full screen navigation.
The Toyota Highlander offers a stylish 7-inch screen for its instrument cluster but it’s not as customizable and doesn’t offer full screen maps.
